I had eggplant rollatini. The eggplant was cooked just right and the sauce was delicious. The waitstaff was very attentive. The food was served in a reasonable amount of time.

The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable about their Asian dishes--the style of cooking and the ingredients. Everything we had was very tasty although they seemed to make sugary sweet sauce quite often. That is probably the usual procedure for the dish tho and we may choose another item on our next visit.

Everything is excellent. Food is delicious. Large portions which costs less than similar restaurants. Meals prepared fast. Worth the drive to West Linn.

Our food was hot and tasty. The timing of the appetizers and entree's was good, and our server did a great job.
Everyone here is so friendly! They made a special dessert (off menu) & wrote a Chinese birthday greeting for my husband's birthday. The food is very reasonably priced and yummm...esp the schezuan green bean chicken!

Excellent food and service. Suggest calling ahead for a reservation if you have a large party. The restaurant is small and can only accommodate one or two large parties. Great part of our West Linn restaurant scene.

But should one find a particular dish not to his or her likening, Janette,who owns the restaurant along with her husband will see that it is remade to the individual's preference. We ordered a very diverse meal - egg rolls, shrimp rolls, honey walnut shrimp, General Tso's Chicken and Lemon Chicken (with the sauce on the side) Only slip up was that they forgot the lemon sauce. Very nice quality of food and prices were very reasonable for what you received. I did request that they go light on the bok choy, since none of us particularly like it.

Essence of China is my favorite Chinese Restaurant. The food is excellent and the value is good. I have been eating at this restaurant for years. The restaurant.com is great for a family.
I would have rated this visit as excellent, EXCEPT that our food was not very hot. Chinese food is always served hot, even tea was not as hot as it should be. You would not think of serving me MELTED ice cream, so why would you serve food that is to be eaten hot, very barley warm???

We had to go looking for the server to lodge a complaint. There was no greeter when we entered the restaurant and we had to call out. The egg roll was almost ice cold and the entrees just barely warm.

Marvelously courteous service by a slightly shy yet friendly and helpful waitress. We loved the asparagus with beef. Potstickers looked handmade and had great flavor but thicker than usual shells; sauce was spicy. Gen. Tso's chicken was dark, rich, sweet, could have used a balancing vinegar nip. Room was dark and bland but clean and pleasant, with low-key classy art.
General Tso chicken is fantastic, as was Happy Family and the Sizzling plate. Couple we introduced to "our" place decided it will become theirs as well. Waitress was always there without being intrusive. We first went thru restaurant.com but did not use certificate until maybe 12th visit because prices are so reasonable - needed 4 adults to make it worth using!

We had been there once before over a year ago and the food was great. Unfortunatley, this time around it was not. There was a good dinner crowd and we thought maybe we just ordered the wrong things, but judging by other patrons reactions, it seemed to be across the board bad.

We as a family eat at Essence of China at least once a month. Tonight it was just the 2 of us on a date night. We ordered a couple of different dinners than we usually do and we didn't care for the taste of them. Nonetheless, it will not stop us from coming back. We will just order what we are use to!

It was New Year's day and we waited 15 minutes before being acknowledged. There were about 8 people in the lobby area, that were all waiting for food to go. There were 4 tables of (about the 10) that needed to be cleaned. After we were seated it was another 20 before they took our order...35 minutes from when we arrived. We were in the restaurant for over 1 1/2 hours of which we found out when we were leaving, that they were short staffed, an employee did not show up.
The food is always good but although nice, the service is slow and a little unorganized. I think they understaff to save costs which I understand the reasoning but the guests suffer.
Wonderful suggestions were made for us and the staff went out of their way to be friendly.

When we come to visit our son and his family we always insist on coming to this wonderful family restaurant. The waiter we had was very rushed and not at all friendly or personal. I think the restaurant is really understaffed and needs more waiters. The one we had had to rush quickly and didn't have time to even listen to our wishes!

The server was excelent. He was available without hovering and didn't make me feel pressured or rushed. It was a great casual and comfortable environment. Though the food was very good, I was a little disipointed with the Pork, it was a little dry, but tender and very tasty. All the portions were well worth the cost and I had leftovers enough for dinner.

The restaurant was extremely busy when we were there but that was great to see because a lot of the businesses in the area have closed. Glad to see they are thriving. Great food! Service was great and sure working their butts off!

It is in Old town West Linn, which is a very quaint place to visit. We had a very pleasant experience and the food was great.

Received the help we needed to stay on our vegetarian diet. Brought home enough for dinner. So the two of us enjoyed two full meals out of it. Plus my wife enjoyed looking in the nearby stores.

It isn't ever busy which we like, but at the same time, I reccomend you, and want you to continue to be a great restaurant. One thing I would change is the newspaper is always on the table, where people are making a first restaurant impression, and I would change that. You want a good memory not a newspaper memory in a restaurant. We are there about 5 times a year.
